Alabama Tourism Department Projects Travelers Will Spend $25 Billion in 2025

2025-09-02

Montgomery – The Alabama Tourism Department announced today that the state’s travel and hospitality industry is projected to generate an unprecedented $25 billion in tourist spending in 2025, marking a milestone in tourism growth and a testament to more than two decades of strategic marketing campaigns.

Central to this success has been the innovative “Year of” campaigns, launched more than 20 years ago under the leadership of Director Lee Sentell. Each year, the department highlights a different theme that showcases the rich history, culture, and natural beauty of Alabama—whether it’s the Year of Food, Year of Music, or the current Year of Alabama Trails. These campaigns have consistently drawn visitors from across the nation and around the globe, offering them unique ways to experience Alabama and fueling growth in local communities.

The strength of these rotating campaigns lies in their ability to encourage exploration. By spotlighting a new theme annually, residents and visitors alike are inspired to discover hidden corners of the state they might not otherwise experience. From small-town restaurants and local art festivals to historic landmarks and outdoor adventures, the “Year of” initiative has transformed tourism into a journey of ongoing discovery, broadening the appeal of Alabama year after year.

The results of this strategy are evident in the numbers. In 2003, when the “Year of” campaign was still in its infancy and the “Year of Alabama Gardens” had just launched, Alabama’s tourism industry generated just over $6 billion in economic impact. By 2024, during the “Year of Alabama Food,” that number had more than tripled, reaching nearly $23 billion. The dramatic increase underscores not only the strength of Alabama’s tourism offerings but also the long-term impact of sustained, creative marketing.

This approach has proven to be a driving force behind Alabama’s rising tourism economy. According to the Alabama Tourism Department, each campaign has not only increased visitor spending but also created new opportunities for small businesses, hospitality workers, and cultural institutions. The cumulative effect has built Alabama’s reputation as a diverse, welcoming, and ever-evolving destination—one that rivals larger tourism states in both reach and revenue.

“Reaching a projected $25 billion in 2025 is not just a milestone for tourism—it’s a milestone for Alabama’s entire economy,” said Grant Wallace, Chief Financial Officer of the Alabama Tourism Department. “Visitor spending supports thousands of jobs, strengthens small businesses, and generates tax revenue that benefits every citizen. These numbers prove that tourism is one of the most dynamic and reliable drivers of growth in our state.”

Director Sentell, who decides each year’s theme, credits the campaigns’ success to their authenticity and the stories they tell. “When we launched the first ‘Year of’ campaign, our goal was to show the world what makes Alabama special. Twenty years later, that same spirit continues to guide us—and the results speak for themselves. Tourism is not only thriving, it is shaping Alabama’s economic future in a profound way,” Sentell said.

With the projection of $25 billion in 2025, the Alabama Tourism Department reaffirms its commitment to growing the state’s economy while inviting the world to explore Alabama in new and meaningful ways.
